Newborn Screenings

After the birth of your baby at Woman’s Hospital, there are many tests performed on your baby to screen for possible conditions that could affect the baby’s health.

There are certain blood tests that are routinely performed on newborn infants. These Newborn Screening Blood Tests check for the possibility that an infant may have inherited any of a number of defects in body metabolism. Some babies appear healthy, but many have a rare health condition that can cause serious problems. If a condition is discovered early through newborn screening, in many cases there may be treatments available so that the infant can lead a more normal life.

Also, the Newborn Hearing Screening Program provides a hearing screening for every infant born at Woman’s. This hearing screening is performed by a hearing screening technician who is supervised by a certified audiologist.
